FCA Firm Checker — how to verify a crypto company

Quick answer: Search firm name on fca.org.uk/firms/firm-search. Check permissions include 'cryptoasset' activities. MLR-registered only ≠ fully authorised until October 2027 regime. Avoid firms not on the register. Firm Checker shows warnings and cancelled firms.

The FCA Firm Checker is the public search tool for authorised firms. After June 2026 landmark rules, understanding the difference between MLR registration and full authorisation matters more than ever.

Firm Checker vs Register

Firm Checker (fca.org.uk/firms/firm-search) gives a simplified view — good for quick checks. Financial Services Register shows full permission schedule, approved persons, and regulatory history. Use both before large transfers.

Check the firm, the details and the activity

Registration is not a guarantee of investment safety

Check the firm, the details and the activity. A text description follows the illustration.

A register entry does not prove that a message came from that firm. Check the identity, contact details and scope together.

  1. 01. Identity. Find the exact legal firm, not just a familiar trading name.
  2. 02. Contact details. Compare its website and contact details with the official record.
  3. 03. Permissions. Check which activities the record actually covers.

What to look for on a crypto exchange

Search exact legal entity name from terms of service. Confirm 'Cryptoasset exchange provider' or custodian permissions. Note registration date. Read any supervisory notices.

MLR registered vs fully authorised

Today most UK-facing crypto firms are registered under money laundering rules only. From 25 October 2027, in-scope firms need full FCA authorisation with capital and conduct rules. During 2026–27 application window, check FCA announcements for applicant lists.

Warning list and clones

FCA Warning List flags unauthorised firms. Clone scams use fake websites copying authorised FRNs. Always navigate to the firm via FCA register link, not Google ads.

If a firm is not listed

Do not send money. Report to FCA consumer helpline. Overseas firms marketing to UK without approval may breach financial promotions rules.
